How To Get A Credit Card With Poor Credit
February 18, 2008 – 8:22 pmSadly, as much as people try to make sure their credit is absolutely perfect the fact remains that credit can end up being harmed for a variety of reasons. Often, there is a stereotyped opinion that the only people who have bad credit are lazy, irresponsible people who live outside their means and then do not make their credit payments.
Yes, there are such people in the world and to say such individuals do not exist would be woefully dishonest. However, such people are not the totality of those who have poor credit. Many times, situations that are out of a person’s hands can lead to bad credit. Medical emergencies and the bills associated with them are the most common example. Regardless, however, of the reason that a person’s credit was “wrecked” the fact remains that bad credit stays on one’s credit report for several years.
This has a number of residual effects with the most common being that it becomes very difficult to be approved for a credit card with a negative credit rating. Of course, those who have bad credit will then wonder what can be done to be approved for a credit card if a credit rating is poor. Well, there is some good news in this regard and that is that no matter how bad one’s credit may be there is always various avenues that can be taken to have a credit card approved if your credit rating is poor.
Probably the best way to be approved for a credit card if you have poor credit would be to find a co-signer. That way, regardless of whether or not your credit is poor if the co-signers credit is excellent then the card will be approved. Of course, finding someone to co-sign a credit card application for you may prove to be difficult considering that they co-signer will be responsible for your debts if you default. There is no need to despair if you are unable to find a co-signer, however, as there are other options available.
If you are in need of a credit card that will approve individuals with poor credit, then it may be worthwhile to go the route of applying for credit cards at retail stores and gas stations. The requirements for these cards are usually very low and approval is usually much easier. However, the cards cannot be used at locations other than the retail stores/gas station that issue the card. But, if you wish to use a credit card for purchasing then such a card may prove to be a wise move. Also, the payments that you make on the card will help rebuild and re-establish your credit rating.
Probably the last resort with regards to acquiring a credit card when your credit is poor would be to seek a secured card. A secured card essentially works in the way that a credit card is offered in association with a savings account and a portion of the savings account is frozen in the case of a default on the card. That is, if you have a $500 credit card, there must be $500 frozen in your savings account for a specified period of time. That is, the money may be frozen for several months and if the payments on the credit card have been paid on time the frozen dollar amount may be released. Secured credit cards may not be perfect, but they can effectively help in rebuilding credit.
While having poor credit comes with a number of problems, poor credit is not the end of the world when it comes to being approved for a credit card as there are options available for those who are having problems being approved. So, if anything, do not despair over a poor credit card situation and follow on of the three aforementioned steps!
